Why the Ground Beats the Air

Every heat pump moves heat rather than making it. An ordinary air-source heat pump exchanges that heat with outdoor air, which is a problem, because outdoor air is at its most extreme exactly when you need the system most. It is hardest to pull heat out of 20 degree air, and hardest to dump heat into 95 degree air.

A ground-source system exchanges with the earth instead. Below the frost line the temperature barely moves across the year. The system gets a mild, stable partner in both directions, which is why efficiency ratings on geothermal run several times higher than combustion equipment.

There is no outdoor condenser sitting beside the house. Nothing to look at, nothing to listen to, and nothing for salt air or a lawnmower to chew on.

Kent County soil is well suited to this

Flat lots, workable ground, and properties with enough yard for a horizontal loop. Around Hartly, Marydel, Harrington, Felton, and out toward the Maryland line, most homes have the acreage to make the cheaper loop option work.

Loop Types

  • Horizontal loop. Trenches a few feet down across the yard. The least expensive option when you have the land, which many properties in our area do.
  • Vertical loop. Bored wells instead of trenches. Costs more, but it fits on a small lot and disturbs almost nothing on the surface once it is finished.
  • Pond loop. If you have a pond of adequate depth and size, coils sit in the water. This is the cheapest loop of all when the site allows it.

Which one is right is a site question, not a catalog question. We walk the property, look at the acreage, the water table, and where the utilities run, before anybody quotes anything.

What You Get Out of It

Lowest operating cost

Nothing else we install runs cheaper month to month. The efficiency gap over conventional equipment is not marginal, it is a multiple.

Long equipment life

The indoor unit lives in a conditioned space with no weather exposure. The ground loop itself is rated in decades, well beyond the equipment it feeds.

Heating and cooling in one

One system, both seasons, and no separate furnace or condenser. Many setups also preheat domestic hot water as a side effect.

Nothing outside

No condenser to screen, to hear from the patio, or to replace early because it sat in salt air for ten years.

The Honest Part: Up-Front Cost

Geothermal costs more to install than a conventional system. There is no way around that, and anybody who glosses over it is selling rather than advising. You are paying for excavation or drilling on top of the equipment itself.

What changes the math is incentives and time horizon. Energize Delaware and Delmarva Power offer rebates on qualifying high-efficiency equipment, and federal tax credits have historically treated ground-source systems more generously than any other category. We help our customers work through what they qualify for rather than handing them a stack of forms.

The second thing is how long you plan to stay. Geothermal is a long-hold decision. If you are selling in three years, we will tell you to put in a good heat pump instead. If this is the house you retire in, the operating cost difference compounds every single month for twenty years.

Who Should Not Buy Geothermal

We would rather say this plainly than have you find out later.

  • Small lots with no room for a horizontal loop and no budget for vertical bores
  • Anyone moving within a few years, since the payback period outlives your ownership
  • Homes with ductwork in poor enough shape that it would undercut the efficiency you paid for. Fix the duct first, or the money is wasted
  • Anyone who needs the lowest possible up-front number today. A quality air-source heat pump is a genuinely good system and costs far less to install

Service and Support

We install and we service. Ground loops are effectively maintenance free once they are in, but the indoor equipment still wants an annual look: loop pressure, flow rate, desuperheater if you have one, and the usual filter and coil work. That is covered under the Comfort Protection Plan.

Geothermal Questions

It depends on the size of the system and the trench layout, and it is a real amount of ground. Most properties around Hartly, Marydel, Felton, and Harrington have plenty. On a tighter lot in a Dover development, vertical bores are usually the answer instead. We measure rather than estimate.

Trenching disturbs the yard and it gets backfilled and graded when the loop is in. Grass comes back over a season. Vertical bores disturb far less surface area. Neither one leaves you with a permanently visible scar, but the first summer will not look like a golf course.

Loop piping is rated in the range of fifty years, which outlives the indoor equipment by a wide margin. When the heat pump eventually needs replacing, the loop stays in the ground and the second system costs a fraction of the first.

No. It runs on electricity like any heat pump, so it goes down with the power. The upside is that its electrical draw is low enough that a properly sized generator can carry it, which is not always true of electric resistance backup heat.

Often yes, but it has to be evaluated honestly. Geothermal moves air at different volumes than an old furnace did, and undersized or leaky duct will strangle the efficiency you just paid a premium for. If the duct needs work we say so before you commit, not after.
