Air conditioners in the Valley work harder than almost anywhere in the country, so they tend to age faster too. As a rough guide, a system under about ten years old is usually worth repairing when a single part fails. Once a unit is past twelve to fifteen years, the math starts to shift, especially if the expensive parts are involved.
Weigh the repair against the whole system
A good rule of thumb is to compare the cost of the repair to the value and remaining life of the system. Replacing a failed capacitor on a healthy eight-year-old unit is an easy yes. A major repair like a compressor or coil on an older system that is already limping is where replacement often wins, because you could sink real money into a unit that fails again next season.
