A new high-efficiency air conditioner rarely costs sticker price once rebates and tax credits are in the picture. The tricky part is that the rules come from the utilities and the government, not from your contractor, and they change. Here is the honest lay of the land.
First, which utility are you on?
The Phoenix metro is served by two main utilities, SRP and APS, and which one covers your home depends on your exact address rather than your city. Both serve parts of the same cities, so it is genuinely mixed. Your utility bill is the fastest way to confirm which one serves your home.
What SRP offers
SRP runs rebates on qualifying high-efficiency cooling equipment, and on qualifying systems those can reach up to $1,125. The exact amount depends on the equipment and the current program terms, which is why we confirm the real figure for your specific system before you sign anything.
What APS offers
APS offers its own rebates on qualifying high-efficiency systems, up to around $200. It is a smaller number than SRP in many cases, but it is still real money back on a purchase you were making anyway.
Federal tax credits stack on top
On top of the utility rebate, the federal 25C energy-efficient home improvement tax credit can apply to qualifying high-efficiency equipment, including heat pumps. Because it is a tax credit rather than an instant rebate, it shows up when you file, but it can meaningfully lower the true cost of the upgrade.
