How the right size is actually chosen
A proper sizing is based on your specific home, not a rule of thumb or the size of the old unit. It accounts for square footage, ceiling height, insulation, the number and orientation of windows, sun exposure, and the ductwork. Done right, the system matches the real cooling load of the house.
Why oversizing is common and bad
An oversized air conditioner cools the air quickly and then shuts off, which sounds fine until you feel the results. It short cycles, turning on and off too often, which wears out parts and wastes energy. Worse, it does not run long enough to pull humidity out of the air, so the house can feel cold and clammy at the same time.
Why undersizing fails in July
On the other end, a unit that is too small simply cannot keep up when it is 115 degrees outside. It runs constantly, never reaches the setpoint, and drives your bills up while leaving you uncomfortable on the hottest days. Neither extreme is what you want.
Ductwork matters as much as tonnage
Even a perfectly sized unit disappoints if the ducts leak. Conditioned air escaping into the attic means the system works harder and some rooms never keep up. That is why a real install includes a look at the ductwork, not just the equipment outside.
