HVAC SEO

Rank before the cold snap, not during it.

Search results move slowly and heating demand does not. Everything about how we sequence the work for a heating and cooling contractor follows from that one mismatch.

Build it in the quiet months or do not bother.

Search work has a lag of roughly three to six months between publishing and ranking. Heating demand spikes in a two week window. Do that arithmetic once and the whole calendar rearranges itself.

AprJulOct JanApr heating spike start in April, ranking by October start in January, ranking in spring

Illustrative timing, not a promise. The lag depends on your domain history, competition, and how much technical debt the site carries.

The contractor who starts in April is visible when the first hard freeze hits. The one who calls us in December is buying ads at peak prices while the pages mature into a season that has already ended. Neither situation is hopeless, but they cost very different amounts.

Three kinds of search, three kinds of page

Heating and cooling generates unusually varied intent. Treating it as one keyword list is the most common mistake we inherit.

Intent 01

Broken, now

No heat, blowing warm air, unit making a noise. Short queries, heavy map pack, decided in under a minute and almost always on a phone. Proximity and profile do most of the work here, and a blog post will never win it.

Intent 02

Pricing a replacement

Cost of a new furnace, high efficiency worth it, heat pump in a cold climate. Long queries, no map pack, read across several sessions and several sites. This is where honest numbers on a page beat a lead magnet.

Intent 03

Shopping a brand

Dealer and model searches from people who already decided what they want. Low volume, very high intent, and usually uncontested because most contractors never build the page.

These three do not compete for the same page and should never be crammed onto one. Emergency intent is won by the profile and proximity, replacement intent by depth and honest numbers, brand intent by simply being the only dealer in the market who bothered to publish a page for the model somebody typed. Keeping them separate is also what keeps the site from cannibalizing itself, which is the failure we most often find when we inherit an account that has been optimized for years without ever ranking.

The standing work, on a heating and cooling calendar.

01

Profile categories that match the season

Primary and secondary categories carry real weight in the map pack, and the right primary in January is not always the right one in July. Getting the category set correct, keeping service lists current, and answering questions before a competitor does is weekly work, not a one time setup.

02

A page for every town you actually cover

Not a list of forty cities in a footer. A real page per town with genuine local detail, built only for places you truly send a truck. Proximity is a ranking factor you cannot fake, and thin pages for towns you do not serve drag down the ones you do.

03

Answer the money questions in public

What a replacement costs, whether a heat pump works below zero, how long a system should last. Contractors hate publishing numbers and homeowners search for nothing else. A page with an honest range and the reasons it varies outranks a competitor who says call for pricing.

04

Reviews captured at the right moment

A service call and an install have completely different windows for asking. One closes the same afternoon, the other lands better a week later once the house feels different. We set the request timing per job type rather than firing the same message at everyone.

05

Reporting that separates emergency from replacement

A month of no heat calls and a month of quoted installs look identical on a traffic chart and nothing alike on a profit and loss. We split reporting by intent so you can see which half of the business search is actually feeding.

Where to go next

01

The site underneath

Rankings send traffic to a page that has to convert two very different visitors. What that page needs.

02

The whole picture

Search, paid, and site working across a full heating and cooling year.

03

How we approach search generally

The technical pass, the page program, and the reporting standard, across every trade.

How the work runs

  1. 01 Start in the shoulder Spring and autumn are when rankings can be built, because summer is when they have to already exist.
  2. 02 Town and service pages One page per town per service, because a homeowner searches for their town and not for your region.
  3. 03 Profile for the freeze The profile takes the emergency call at 2am, so its hours, photos and services are load bearing.
  4. 04 Track by intent A maintenance search and a no-heat search are worth different amounts and should be reported apart.

What heating and cooling contractors ask

Q.01When should we start if we want to be ranking by winter?

Spring, realistically. Pages take three to six months to mature and the heating spike is short. Starting in April means you are visible for the first freeze. Starting in November means paying peak ad prices while the pages catch up to a season that is ending.

Q.02Should we target every town within an hour?

No. Proximity is a real ranking input, and a page for a town you rarely reach is thin content that drags on everything else. We map the towns you genuinely serve and build for those, then expand as your coverage actually expands.

Q.03Do we have to publish our prices?

You do not have to, but the pages that rank for replacement cost queries are the ones that answer them. An honest range with the reasons it varies works fine. Refusing to say anything hands the query to whoever will.

Q.04Is a heat pump page worth building in a cold climate?

Increasingly yes. Cold climate heat pump searches have grown fast and most contractors in northern markets have not built anything for them, which makes it one of the few uncontested pages left in this trade.

Q.05Our map pack ranking swings week to week. Is something broken?

Usually not. Map results shift by the searcher's exact location, so two people in the same town see different orders. We measure with a grid across your service area rather than one search from your office, because the single check is the one that lies.

Q.06What happens to the work if we pause for a season?

The pages stay and keep ranking for a while, though profile and review momentum fade faster than page rankings do. If cash flow means pausing, we would rather cut scope and keep the profile work running than stop everything and restart cold.
