You Do Not Always Need a New Opener

There are two ways to get a garage door onto your phone, and the cheaper one is often available. If your existing opener is sound and reasonably modern, a retrofit controller wires to the same terminals as your wall button and adds a sensor to report the door position. That is a fraction of the cost of a new opener.

If your opener is old enough that it lacks rolling-code security, a retrofit is the wrong answer. Putting phone control on a fixed-code opener is adding convenience to a lock that does not really lock. In that case a new smart-capable unit is the honest recommendation, and we will explain why rather than just quoting the bigger number.

Smart Garage Door FAQs

Often yes. A retrofit controller wires to the same terminals as your wall button and adds a door position sensor. It works with most reasonably modern openers and costs far less than a new unit.

A modern one with rolling-code security is, and the app connection is encrypted. What is not secure is bolting phone control onto an old fixed-code opener, which is why we check the age of your unit first.

The door still works normally from the wall button and your remotes. You lose the phone control until the connection is back, not the door.

Yes, the controller needs a usable signal at the opener. Detached garages sometimes need an extender, and we will tell you during the visit rather than after.

The common platforms are supported by most current units. Tell us what you use and we will confirm compatibility before you buy anything.
