(979) 977-2504What Your Garage Door Noise Actually Means
Different noises point at different parts. This is roughly how we triage it over the phone before we arrive.
| The noise | Usual cause | How urgent |
|---|---|---|
| Squealing or screeching | Dry rollers, hinges or a dry opener rail | Low. This is the classic tune-up fix. |
| Grinding | Worn roller bearings, or a chain running dry on the rail | Medium. It gets worse and takes the track with it. |
| Rattling or vibrating | Loose hinges, brackets, track bolts or opener rail hardware | Medium. Loose hardware works looser. |
| Popping or banging | Sections binding, or a door out of balance | Medium to high. Something is fighting the door. |
| A single loud bang | A snapped torsion spring | High. Stop using the door and call us. |
| Straining or humming | Opener working against a door it should not have to lift | High. Usually a spring or balance problem, and it kills openers. |
If your door made one loud bang and now will not open, that is almost certainly a broken spring rather than a noise problem.

A Loud Door Is Usually a Cheap Fix Getting Expensive
Most noise comes down to metal running on metal where it should be rolling, or hardware that has shaken loose over a few thousand cycles. Both are inexpensive to put right and both get more expensive the longer they run.
A worn roller that drags instead of turning wears a groove in the track. Loose track brackets let the track spread until a roller comes out. A door that is out of balance makes the opener carry weight it was never designed to lift, which is how a $200 visit becomes a new opener.
The other reason to care: noise is the only early warning a garage door gives you. It is worth listening to.
What a Quiet-Down Visit Includes
One note on lubricant, because it is the most common thing we undo: the track is not supposed to be greased. Rollers ride in it, and grease in the track collects grit and makes the problem worse.

Noisy Garage Door FAQs
Most often worn rollers, hardware that has vibrated loose, or lubricant that has dried out. A door that got loud gradually is usually maintenance. A door that got loud suddenly, especially with a bang, is usually a broken part.
A garage door specific lubricant, on the hinges, rollers, springs and opener rail. Do not use WD-40 as a lubricant, it is a solvent, and do not grease the track. Rollers are meant to roll along the track, and grease in there collects grit.
Usually yes, noticeably. Swapping worn steel rollers for nylon ones is one of the biggest noise reductions available for the money, and it is a routine job.
Not usually. Straining points at balance rather than lubrication, which means the springs are not carrying the weight they should. That one is worth looking at soon, because it wears out openers.
It certainly can, and it is one of the most common reasons people call us. Between new rollers, tightened hardware and correct lubrication, most doors get dramatically quieter in a single visit.
